Restoring a Period Cottage Floor in Alford, Lincolnshire
This charming cottage in Alford Lincolnshire, dates back to the early 1800s, and our clients were keen to restore its original character. The floorboards, a key feature of the room, had been hidden under carpets for many years.
As you can see in the photos, the floorboards were in a typical state for a period property. Black bituminous paint, a common feature in Georgian-era homes, was used to create a border around the edges, with a rug placed in the middle .
We began by removing the newer floorboards that had been installed in the middle of the room for electrical work and replaced them with reclaimed boards from a local source.
Using our dust-free floor sanding equipment, we meticulously removed the black paint and sanded the entire floor. To prepare for the stain, we also polished the floorboards to a smooth finish.
Our clients opted for an antique oak oil stain to complement the age of the cottage. After staining, we applied a clear hardwax oil to provide a durable and easy-to-maintain finish.
To ensure long-lasting beauty, we included a complimentary cleaning and maintenance kit with the project.
